I found one bed bug — is that an infestation?
One insect means one confirmed introduction, not necessarily an established population. Capture it in a container rather than crushing it, do not start spraying, and have the sleeping area inspected so the extent can be established.
Can bed bugs survive Canadian winters?
Inside a heated home, yes. Cold only affects them at sustained freezing temperatures, so leaving items on a balcony overnight is not a reliable treatment.
Do I have to throw out my mattress?
Usually not. Discarded mattresses often spread the problem through hallways and elevators. Encasement after treatment is normally the better option.
